Zambia Accelerates Energy Diversification With Chisamba Solar Expansion

Zambia has taken another significant step towards strengthening its electricity system following the commissioning of the second phase of the 100 MW Chisamba Solar Power Plant, which adds a further 100 MW of utility-scale solar generation to the national grid.

The project, officially inaugurated by President Hakainde Hichilema, forms part of the country’s broader strategy to diversify its power mix as climate-related pressures continue to expose the risks of heavy dependence on hydropower.

The additional generation capacity is expected to ease pressure on Zambia’s electricity network by improving supply reliability for residential consumers while providing more dependable power to commercial and industrial users. Energy-intensive sectors, including mining and manufacturing, are expected to benefit from improved electricity availability, supporting productivity and reducing the operational disruptions associated with power shortages.

The expansion also sends a positive signal to investors seeking greater certainty over Zambia’s energy infrastructure. A more reliable electricity supply is regarded as a critical factor in supporting industrial development, attracting new investment and enhancing the country’s competitiveness.

The project comes as Zambia continues to confront prolonged drought conditions that have constrained hydroelectric generation across the region. Reduced water levels have reinforced the need for a more balanced generation portfolio, with solar emerging as a key component of the country’s long-term energy transition strategy.

Expanding utility-scale solar capacity not only strengthens energy security but also improves the resilience of Zambia’s power system against climate-related disruptions. As renewable energy deployment gathers pace, the country is positioning itself to reduce exposure to hydrological risk while increasing the share of low-carbon generation in its electricity mix.

Beyond strengthening the grid, the Chisamba Solar Power Plant Phase II supports Zambia’s wider economic and sustainability objectives. Greater access to reliable and affordable electricity is expected to stimulate investment in emerging industries, create employment opportunities and accelerate the development of a cleaner, more diversified economy.

The latest expansion underscores Zambia’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure as it works to deliver a more secure, resilient and sustainable electricity sector capable of supporting long-term economic growth.
