Wetility Scales Smart Energy Management for African Consumers
As distributed energy solutions gain momentum across Africa, South African energy technology company Wetility is positioning itself at the forefront of digital power management by helping households and small businesses optimise electricity consumption through connected energy systems.
Founded in 2019 by Zimbabwean entrepreneur Vincent Maposa, Wetility has developed an integrated energy platform that combines solar generation, battery storage, financing and digital energy management into a single customer offering. The company is responding to growing demand for reliable electricity as consumers increasingly seek alternatives to unstable grid supply and rising energy costs.
Central to Wetility’s proposition is a cloud-connected platform that enables customers to monitor and control their energy systems remotely via a mobile application. Users can track electricity consumption in real time, manage power usage more efficiently, make digital bill payments and access incentives linked to their energy consumption patterns.
The company’s solutions serve a broad customer base, including residential users, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), retail outlets and residential property developers. By integrating hardware with software-driven energy intelligence, Wetility aims to improve energy resilience while giving customers greater visibility over operating costs.
Recognising that upfront capital remains one of the biggest barriers to clean energy adoption, the company has also introduced flexible financing models that allow qualifying customers to install energy systems without significant initial investment. The approach is designed to accelerate the uptake of distributed energy technologies across underserved markets.
Maposa brings more than a decade of experience in market analysis, consulting and power technologies to the business. A graduate of the University of Zimbabwe, where he studied Mathematics and Statistical Sciences, he began his career at Frost & Sullivan as a research analyst before progressing to industry analyst.
He later joined Deloitte South Africa as a consultant before moving to Cummins, the global manufacturer of engines and power generation equipment. His experience across market intelligence, strategy and power solutions has helped shape Wetility’s technology-led approach to addressing Africa’s evolving energy challenges.
As decentralised energy systems continue to expand across the continent, companies such as Wetility are demonstrating how digital platforms, innovative financing and intelligent energy management can improve electricity access while supporting the transition towards more resilient and customer-centric power systems.
