South Africa Commissions Africa’s Largest Hybrid Solar and Battery Project

South Africa has added a major new asset to its renewable energy portfolio with the commissioning of the Hydra hybrid power project in the Northern Cape, the largest integrated solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage facility on the African continent.

Developed by TotalEnergies in partnership with Hydra Storage Holding and Reatile Renewables, the project combines 216 MW of solar PV generation with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), representing a significant advancement in dispatchable renewable energy for the South African grid.

Under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom, the facility will deliver 75 MW of dispatchable electricity daily between 05:00 and 21:30, providing reliable renewable power during periods of high electricity demand. The project is expected to generate more than 400 GWh of electricity annually, enough to meet the equivalent annual consumption of approximately 200,000 households.

The commissioning of Hydra marks another milestone in South Africa’s energy transition as the country accelerates efforts to diversify its electricity mix, improve grid resilience and reduce dependence on coal-fired generation.

Magali Pailhé, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Southern Africa, said the project demonstrates how renewable energy paired with storage can strengthen electricity security while supporting decarbonisation goals.
“The Hydra project enables us to provide dispatchable renewable electricity to South Africa’s grid while expanding our renewable energy portfolio in Africa’s largest electricity market,” she said.

The project was procured through the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), which was established to fast-track reliable generation capacity capable of addressing South Africa’s electricity supply shortfall.

Unlike conventional solar plants, the integration of large-scale battery storage enables Hydra to store excess daytime generation and dispatch electricity during peak demand periods. This capability improves system flexibility, reduces renewable energy curtailment and enhances overall grid reliability—an increasingly important requirement as variable renewable generation expands across the country.

Hydra is jointly owned by TotalEnergies (35%), Hydra Storage Holding (35%) and Reatile Renewables (30%), reflecting continued collaboration between international energy companies and South African independent power producers in delivering large-scale infrastructure.

The project’s completion comes at a critical time for South Africa’s electricity sector. Although the country has made progress in reducing load shedding, ageing transmission infrastructure and limited grid capacity continue to constrain the integration of new renewable energy projects.

At the same time, declining global costs for solar modules and battery technologies have improved the economics of hybrid renewable energy developments, making dispatchable clean power increasingly competitive with conventional generation.

Industry analysts view hybrid solar-plus-storage projects as a key component of South Africa’s evolving electricity system. By combining renewable generation with energy storage, such facilities provide greater operational flexibility, support grid stability and help address the intermittency challenges traditionally associated with solar power.

As investment in renewable energy continues to accelerate, projects such as Hydra are expected to play an increasingly important role in strengthening South Africa’s energy security while advancing the country’s long-term decarbonisation objectives.
