Egypt Announces Near-Field Gas Discovery

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the discovery, made in the West Abu Madi concession, has an estimated production potential of 50 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d). Its proximity to existing infrastructure is expected to accelerate time-to-market, with tie-back to nearby facilities achievable within weeks. The well lies less than two kilometres from current production assets, offering a cost-efficient route to integration into the national gas grid.

The find follows the successful drilling of the Nidoco N-2 exploration well, located approximately three kilometres offshore in shallow waters within Kafr El-Sheikh governorate. With a water depth of roughly 10 metres, the development presents relatively low technical complexity compared to deeper offshore projects, further supporting rapid commercialisation.
Operations in the concession are led by Eni, in partnership with BP and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, via the Petrobel joint venture. The consortium’s established presence in the Nile Delta basin has enabled efficient exploration and appraisal activity in mature acreage.

The announcement comes as Egypt seeks to reverse a recent decline in natural gas output and reassert its position as a regional gas supplier. Government data indicate that current production is approximately 4.1 billion cubic feet per day, with a strategic target of 6.6 billion cubic feet per day by 2027.

To support this objective, Cairo is accelerating upstream investment, with plans to drill more than 100 exploratory wells over the year. The latest discovery highlights the continued resource potential of the Nile Delta and the importance of near-field exploration in unlocking incremental volumes with shorter development timelines.

For energy sector stakeholders, the development signals a pragmatic shift towards fast-track, infrastructure-led growth—prioritising lower-risk reserves that can be brought online quickly to meet rising domestic demand and reduce import dependency.
