Dangote Named AEC’s African Energy Person Of The Year 2026
The African Energy Chamber has named Aliko Dangote its African Energy Person of the Year 2026, recognising the businessman’s growing influence on Africa’s industrial and energy sectors through large-scale investments in refining, manufacturing and infrastructure.
The award highlights Dangote’s role in advancing energy security and industrialisation across the continent, particularly through projects that reduce Africa’s dependence on imported refined fuels and strengthen domestic value chains.
Through the Dangote Group, Dangote has built one of Africa’s largest industrial enterprises, with operations spanning cement, fertiliser, sugar, flour and logistics. His long-standing strategy has focused on developing local manufacturing capacity and infrastructure to retain more economic value within African markets.
At the centre of that vision is the Dangote Refinery, a 650,000-barrel-per-day facility widely regarded as the world’s largest single-train refinery. The integrated complex includes petrochemical and fertiliser plants and produces petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other refined products for domestic and export markets.
The refinery is reshaping Nigeria’s downstream sector after decades of reliance on imported fuels, which exposed the country to subsidy costs, supply disruptions and foreign exchange pressures. By enabling large-scale domestic refining, the project has strengthened Nigeria’s energy resilience while improving regional fuel supply security.
Dangote products are already being exported to markets including Ghana, Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire, as well as to the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.
Despite financing challenges, technical complexity and currency volatility, the refinery has emerged as a landmark industrial project for the continent. Dangote Group is now considering an expansion that could increase refining capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day, alongside fuel storage investments in Namibia and potential downstream projects in East Africa.
Beyond industry, Dangote leads the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which supports healthcare, education, nutrition and disaster relief initiatives across Africa.
The African Energy Chamber said the annual award honours individuals driving African energy development, infrastructure growth and economic resilience across the continent.
