Chevron Advances Egypt Gas Drilling At Narges With Eni And Mubadala

Chevron Corporation has commenced drilling operations at Egypt’s offshore Narges gas field, marking another step in the country’s push to strengthen domestic gas supply and reinforce exploration activity across the Eastern Mediterranean.

The new appraisal and development campaign, being carried out alongside Eni, Mubadala Energy and Tharwa Petroleum Company, is centred on the Mediterranean-based Narges concession and forms part of broader efforts to unlock additional gas resources in Egypt’s offshore portfolio.

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, visited the drilling site aboard the Stena Forth drillship as operations officially got underway. The launch comes as Cairo intensifies efforts to raise local production and reduce reliance on imported natural gas amid continued pressure on domestic energy demand.

During the visit, Badawi highlighted the strategic importance of bringing developments such as Narges online and acknowledged the role of international operators in accelerating Egypt’s upstream ambitions. He praised Chevron and Eni for their continued collaboration with the country’s petroleum authorities and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company in progressing offshore exploration despite operational and market headwinds.

The Narges campaign also aligns with Chevron’s wider investment plans across the region. Speaking earlier this year at the Egypt Energy Show, Chevron’s President of Exploration and Production, Clay Neff, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its Egyptian portfolio. Chevron intends to drill two additional gas wells in the country during 2026, including the Narges development and a separate exploration target in the Western Mediterranean in partnership with Shell plc.

Chevron has identified Egypt and the wider Eastern Mediterranean as strategic growth markets, targeting a substantial increase in operational output over the next five years. The expansion is expected to strengthen regional gas production while supporting long-term returns from one of the Mediterranean’s most closely watched upstream markets.
