African Union to Highlight Edo State’s Energy Reform Programme at Abidjan Summit

Edo State’s electricity sector reforms have gained continental recognition after the African Union Commission (AUC) invited the state’s Commissioner for Power to present its energy transformation strategy at a high-level summit in Côte d’Ivoire later this month.

The invitation, issued by the AUC’s Department of Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals (ETTIM), acknowledges the state’s progress in modernising its energy sector and positions Edo as a case study for other African governments pursuing power sector reform.

In a letter signed by Regis Tade, Innovation Expert within the Directorate of Industry, Mining, Entrepreneurship and Tourism (IMET), the Commission invited the Commissioner for Power to participate as an Inspirational Speaker on the Founder Stage during the Joint 9th Specialised Technical Committee (STC) on Finance and the 5th STC on Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals.

The ministerial meeting will take place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from 20 to 24 July 2026, bringing together policymakers, development finance institutions, investors, industry executives and regional stakeholders to examine financing mechanisms for Africa’s industrialisation and long-term economic development.

According to the Commission, Edo State has demonstrated measurable progress in implementing energy sector reforms, with its experience reflecting a combination of innovation, strategic leadership and practical execution. The AU believes these lessons can inform broader discussions on expanding reliable energy infrastructure to support industrial competitiveness across the continent.

The Commission expects the state to outline its approach to strengthening electricity infrastructure and enabling reforms that support investment and economic growth. These insights are expected to contribute to wider policy discussions on improving energy access, accelerating industrial development and creating more resilient power systems across Africa.

Programme details, participation arrangements and other logistical information have been communicated through the formal invitation addressed to the Edo State Government. The correspondence was also copied to the Commissioner for Power, Hon. Paul Usenbo.

The invitation underscores the growing recognition of sub-national energy reform initiatives in Africa and highlights the increasingly important role that state-level electricity strategies can play in advancing regional industrialisation and supporting the continent’s energy transition.
