ACEP Seeks Next Generation Leaders to Strengthen Africa’s Energy Governance Landscape With Next Generation Resource Governance Leaders Program 2027

As Africa accelerates efforts to expand energy access, attract investment and develop its natural resources responsibly, the need for skilled governance professionals is becoming increasingly critical. To help address this challenge, the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has opened applications for its 2027 Next Generation Resource Governance Leaders Programme, a fully funded initiative designed to equip young Africans with the expertise needed to shape the future of the continent’s energy and extractives sectors.

The programme, which will be hosted in Accra, Ghana, combines academic learning with practical industry exposure, providing participants with an opportunity to develop the analytical, leadership and policy skills required to navigate the complex governance challenges facing Africa’s energy industry.

As governments across the continent pursue ambitious energy transition strategies while simultaneously developing oil, gas and mining resources, the demand for professionals capable of balancing economic growth, environmental sustainability and social development continues to grow. ACEP’s initiative aims to cultivate a pipeline of future leaders who can contribute to stronger institutions, transparent resource management and evidence-based policymaking.

Participants will undergo training in resource governance, energy economics, public policy, leadership development, digital communications and technology applications. The programme is designed to strengthen the capacity of emerging professionals to engage with critical issues such as energy security, investment frameworks, revenue management, local content development and sustainable resource utilisation.

For the African energy sector, the programme represents an investment in human capital at a time when many countries are seeking to maximise the value of their natural resources while attracting long-term energy investment. By developing a new generation of governance specialists, policymakers and industry analysts, the initiative could help improve decision-making processes that directly influence project development, regulatory stability and investor confidence.

Applications are open to African nationals residing on the continent who are aged 32 years or younger and demonstrate a strong interest in ensuring that Africa’s energy and extractive resources support inclusive and sustainable development.
ACEP is particularly encouraging applications from graduates and young professionals with backgrounds in energy economics, petroleum and electrical engineering, oil and gas management, public policy, law, development finance, project management, communications, statistics and related disciplines.
Successful candidates will receive comprehensive support throughout the programme, including professional training, mentorship, peer learning opportunities and a monthly stipend. International participants will also receive accommodation and return travel to Ghana.
Applicants are required to submit a curriculum vitae, academic certificates, a motivational statement, a professional reference letter, a response to one of the programme’s essay questions and a copy of their national identification document.

For young professionals seeking to influence the future direction of Africa’s energy and resource sectors, the programme offers a valuable platform to build expertise, expand professional networks and contribute to the governance frameworks that will shape the continent’s long-term energy development.
