Algeria and APPO Signal Deepening Alignment on African Energy Integration

Senior-level talks between Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies and the African Petroleum Producers Organisation (APPO) have highlighted the rising commitment to strengthening cooperation on the continent in terms of both conventional and renewable forms of energy.

The Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, received the APPO Secretary-General in a strategic meeting that focused on strengthening institutional cooperation. An essential aspect of the talks involved the development of structured partnerships geared towards strengthening intra-continental resilience in terms of energy supplies.

APPO’s leadership outlined its upcoming strategic roadmap, which focuses on the development of African-to-African relations in the field of energy. It also highlighted the significance of the effective implementation of the strategy in the member states, with particular reference to the development of domestic and regional energy security. It is important to note that the success of the strategy depends on the involvement and participation of the relevant stakeholders in the respective member states, including Algeria’s institutions in the field of energy and renewable energy.

Regarding the Algerian side, Minister Adjal expressed his views on the upcoming collaboration, with particular reference to the strategic importance of the expansion of the APPO’s scope to include the development of renewable energy, which can contribute to the establishment of diversified forms of collaboration and to making Algeria one of the influential and trustworthy partners in the field.

The Minister also highlighted Algeria’s technical capabilities in the country’s energy sector, stating that these capabilities put Algeria in a good place to effectively contribute to the African energy market. The Minister further highlighted Algeria’s capabilities in terms of participation in the entire spectrum of the energy value chain.

One of the key aspects of the talks was the possible role of Sonelgaz International in promoting cooperation in the region. The Minister highlighted the operation of the company, stating that it was a key factor in the operation of both public and private entities in Algeria, looking to expand operations in Africa, particularly in new markets.

The meeting reflects a broader trend of increasing institutional coordination within Africa’s energy landscape, as countries and regional bodies seek to balance energy security, market integration, and the global transition towards more diversified energy systems.
